Dental Veneers- What are they?

In addition to enhancing the color of your smile by masking discoloration, it can also be used to improve the shape of your smile. The material used for veneers is either porcelain or composite resin. Porcelain veneers are stain resistant as compared to resin veneers.
When should you Get Veneers?
Veneers are considered to be a great alternative to dental crowns. These can be used to solve a variety of dental problems including:
Teeth discoloration due to root canal treatment
Teeth with gaps
Teeth that are chipped, worn out and broken
Misaligned and irregular shaped teeth
What is the Dental Procedure for Veneers?
The procedure for dental veneers is simple. It requires a maximum of 3 to 4 appointments with the dentist. You can get dental veneers for more than one tooth at a time.
Before carrying the dental veneer procedure, the dentist first takes the X-ray and makes an impression of the mouth and teeth of the patient to design customized veneers. It usually takes about 1-2 weeks to get the veneers designed from a dental laboratory.
To put veneers on the teeth, the dentist removes about ½ mm of enamel from the surface of the teeth. This is an amount that nearly equals to veneer’s thickness. To trim off the enamel, the dentist uses local anesthetics to numb the area and so that the patient experiences minimal pain.
Before the veneers are permanently cemented to your teeth, the dentist first fixes it temporarily to examine if it fits well and if veneers are of the desired color. In case there is a slight different in the size, it is trimmed until it achieves a proper fit.
Once the fit and color of veneers is final, the dentist applies special cement to it and places it on top of your teeth. Then a special light beam is used that activates the chemicals in the cement causing it to harden.
Once the procedure is complete, the dentist asks the patient to return after a couple of weeks for a follow up visit and to examine veneer placement.
